STAKEHOLDERS’ ENGAGEMENT ON THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A UNIVERSITY IN WESTERN NORTH REGION
On 8th May, Hon. Wilbert Petty Brentum, Western North Regional Minister, chaired a high-level stakeholders’ engagement on the establishment of a fully fledged university for the Western North Region.
The meeting, held at the Regional Coordinating Council, brought together members of the committee constituted by Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, Minister for Education, to oversee the process for the establishment of new universities across selected regions.
Addressing participants, Hon. Brentum emphasized the urgent need for Western North to have its own fully fledged public university to expand access to higher education, strengthen human capital development, and create opportunities for the youth of the region. He also expressed sincere appreciation to H.E. John Dramani Mahama for his commitment and support toward ensuring that Western North secures a university.
Prof. Augustine Tawiah, former Member of Parliament for Bia West and chairman of the committee set up by the Minister for Education, noted that the Western North Region has a strong case and genuinely deserves a university. He encouraged all stakeholders to actively contribute ideas, technical input, and institutional support to ensure a successful and inclusive process.
The engagement brought together a broad range of stakeholders, including Hon. Kofi Bentil Afful, Member of Parliament for Sefwi Wiawso, traditional authorities, members of the clergy, representatives of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies from Sefwi Wiawso, Akontombra, Suaman, Bibiani and Bodi, as well as other key actors from across the region.
Discussions focused on the strategic importance of the university to the socio-economic transformation of Western North, including its expected impact on education, skills development, research, employment creation, and local economic growth.
Stakeholders present were united in their resolve and reaffirmed their commitment to work collectively to ensure that Western North secures a fully fledged university that will serve both present and future generations.
