The newly appointed Director General of the Ghana AIDS Commission, Dr. Kharmacelle Prosper Akanbong, has embarked on a working visit to the Western North Region as part of his nationwide familiarization tour. Accompanied by senior officers of the Commission, Dr. Akanbong paid a courtesy call on the Western North Regional Minister, Hon. Wilbert Petty Brentum, at the Regional Coordinating Council in Sefwi Wiawso on Monday, 7th April,2025.

The visit provided an opportunity for the newly Director General to officially introduce himself and engage with key stakeholders on strategies to strengthen the region’s response to HIV and AIDS. In his remarks, Dr. Akanbong reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to working closely with regional and district authorities to enhance awareness, prevention, and treatment efforts across the country.

He noted that while Ghana has made significant progress in the fight against HIV/AIDS, more collaborative efforts are needed to address stigma, increase testing rates, and improve access to antiretroviral therapy. “We are here to build stronger partnerships and reinforce our collective responsibility in ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030,” he emphasized.

On behalf of the Hon. Regional Minister, Mr. Seth Adomako Sarkodie, the Head of Human Resource Department warmly welcomed Dr. Akanbong and his team, and assured them of the region’s readiness to support the Commission’s initiatives. He highlighted ongoing regional interventions and pledged the RCC’s continued collaboration in advancing public health and development goals.

The meeting also served as a platform for discussing current HIV prevalence trends in the Western North Region, resource mobilization, and the need to intensify community engagement and education, particularly among the youth.

Dr. Akanbong and his delegation are expected to engage with other stakeholders, including local government officials, health professionals, civil society organizations and media engagements  in Sefwi Wiawso during their visit.

The RCC commends the Ghana AIDS Commission for its proactive leadership and looks forward to deepen partnerships aimed at promoting the health and well-being of all residents in the Western North Region.
